The resistence is nearly non existent. the machine is less than 2 years old. this has been going on for a while. can anything be done. went to store and was told that the machine has limited resistence to begin with, but it was very much different when i first purchased it. anyone around who can repair this, other than local seekonk MA store. I think this is a magnet problem. once the machine was repaired as the pedal came off and in the process one of the magnets in the wheel was lost and repairman used one of my refrigerator magnets to replace it. He was a nice guy who workwed hard but may not have technical knowledge and he is the only service guy with the store. thanks Mike

Here is a link to the warranty. It is a lifetime, as long as you are the original owner. There is an 800 number where you can get parts and assistance. http://bodycraft.wowshopper.com/htm-pages/bodycraft-service-warranty-return-policy.htm If a magnet came out from where it should be, unless you found it on the floor, it is stuck inside the machine. A refrigerator magnet isn't the right way to fix these things. For each magnet on the left, there must be a MATCHING magnet on the right. Installing "just a magnet" will either double the resistance or almost eliminate the resistance. The unit will need to be calibrated once the proper magnet is installed. Make sure you let them know what the repair guy did, so they can get proper repairs done. I used to maintain the equipment for a national fitness chain. I know how frustrating it can be, when you have a 10 step machine that only works for 5 steps. (Just a comparison)

How To Clean Commutator Using Commutator Stone Did you use a commutator stone when installing the new brushes? A commutator stone is used to remove carbon build up from the commutator of a motor or alternator, which is created from worn brushes. The commutator is the internal part of the motor or alternator that spins and makes contact with the motor or alternator brush. BE ADVISED: The dust created from cleaning the commutator is a carbon dust. Use caution when removing dust so as not to inhale. If servicing the motor or alternator without removing from the unit, be sure to disconnect power from the machine. To remove the carbon build up from the commutator, first remove the brush from the motor or alternator. Insert the commutator stone into the brushes place in the motor or alternator. Apply slight pressure against the commutator stone and by hand, slowly turn the motor or alternator shaft. As you are turning the shaft of the motor or alternator, the commutator stone cleans away the carbon that has built up on the commutator. Use a vacuum hose to suck out the dust debris or tip the motor/alternator over and allow the carbon dust to fall out. I am also attaching a video on how to install the brushes just for an extra reference. Stairmaster Alternator Brush Replacement Video

The magnetic resistence level seems to be the same

This unit incorporates an adjusting motor for the magnetic boot. This unit also uses batteries for the upper console functions I would check the batteries first and replace them, if you haven't done so before. If this does not resolve the problem then it could be the adjusting motor, then you will have to pull the the side panels in order to apply a 6v dc to the motor and see if it moves smoothly, if not then replace motor.
